Advice on Weathering the Next Storm

Be Wary Of Fraudulent Contractors And Scam Artists

Take Charge of Your Recovery

Drying Out Process

  1. Begin the drying-out process by opening windows and using large fans and dehumidifiers. However, do not use the air-conditioner, which can spread mold spores.
  2. Begin the cleanup as soon as practical
  3. Be sure to remove all wet items out of the house.  Mold will start quickly in warm humid conditions.
  4. Use a mold preventative (borx solution, bleach/water (1/10) solution or commerical product to clean and disinfect flooded areas.
  5. Wear surgical gloves and masks when removing wet items once the mold appears or there is dust.

If you have flood coverage, document the damage to substantiate your claim.  Make sure to take photos of all the damaged items.  Coordinate with your insurance agent to get a restoration company to dry, clean and decontaminate everything affected.

Individual Disaster Priorities

1. Take lots of pictures of damages before starting clean up. Keep good records of cleaning and repair costs.
2. Register for FEMA assistance (see below)
3. Schedule a property inspection with your insurance adjustor and be there.  The adjustor will want to protect the property and address recovery.
4. Visit the FEMA Disaster Relief Center for assistance. SBA packet must be completed before one can receive other benefits.  Oftentimes, the packet can be completed in the DRC.
5. Someone has be at the home when the FEMA inspector is scheduled.
