FEMA Hold Workshops to Help Make Home More Resistant to Flooding

Georgia property owners in flood-prone areas can get free advice on making their structures disaster resistant. Informal workshops are being held at home improvement stores and hardware stores in Cobb, Walker and DeKalb counties.

Mitigation specialists will come from Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in cooperation with local businesses, building supply centers, relief agencies and local governments. Information will be given one-on-one in English and Spanish, and free publications will be available.

Mitigation workshops are running continuously from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. to give individual explanations on how to brace structures and property against flooding and other hazards. Experts can also answer questions about flood insurance.

Officials urge everyone to attend, including homeowners, building contractors and architects. Anyone may visit at any time and no registration is required.

Workshops will be held daily according to the following schedule:

Drying Out Process

  1. Begin the drying-out process by opening windows and using large fans and dehumidifiers. However, do not use the air-conditioner, which can spread mold spores.
  2. Begin the cleanup as soon as practical
  3. Be sure to remove all wet items out of the house.  Mold will start quickly in warm humid conditions.
  4. Use a mold preventative (borx solution, bleach/water (1/10) solution or commerical product to clean and disinfect flooded areas.
  5. Wear surgical gloves and masks when removing wet items once the mold appears or there is dust.

If you have flood coverage, document the damage to substantiate your claim.  Make sure to take photos of all the damaged items.  Coordinate with your insurance agent to get a restoration company to dry, clean and decontaminate everything affected.
